indifferent I’m growing more inured, but that doesn't mean it doesn't bother me.

Kill the Next Episode Pop-up!

The pop-up box that appears after every attempt to use a link needs to removed.
It is a complete nuisance and, since you've added the bar of contemporaneous episodes at the base of the links, absolutely unnecessary. The truth is the damn thing is more of a hindrance than a help.
If the link is broken, I'm already free to report that. If the link brings me to somewhere I don't want to be, there's already a key for that. And now, if I want to watch the next episode, the previous episode, or a few episodes either way, I could go to the bottom of the page, make my selection, even chose Search Links and thereby go further, faster than if I had hit the Watch the Next Episode key in the box.
I know that there have been other complaints about this. I can't recall where they were, nor do I know where they've gone, but there have been so many complaints about so many things, it would give me an ulcer just to keep track. Fortunately, this one is an easy fix.
There is no need to re-write, re-program, or re-do. Just delete the damn thing and you're through.
I'll thank you now and hope that I'm not getting too far ahead of myself.

Thanks for your feedback! Others have mentioned they don't like this, but more that they'd prefer for it to only come up when they really watched, not just anytime they click a link which we completely agree with. We're working on a fix so that it will only come up in certain instances instead of just from clicking a link and returning to the SideReel page.

Our team is busy with other bug fixes for a little while, but that change to the next episode box is in the plans!

    • Its definitely programable.....
    • Can this be done? Because it's the most ANNOYING box ever. I'm sure it's useful to some, but really annoying as I'm usually clicking multiple links.

If this could be turned on/off it would be hugely appreciated.

Firstly why did you make that pop-up thingy, after we've watched a show, if there's no "Mark Watched" link anywhere on that, is it just to make us click more? It really doesn't have a point as sidereels main purpose(imo) is the tracker... Secondly, the new profile page is reaaaaaaally uncomfortable, if you have a huge tracking list, like I do, you have to scroll like hell to see show's that you missed last week, previous desigene, where we had only our unwatched shows was comfortable and easy to use. Finally, if I check "Watched this show" by mistake on my profile page, I can't go to the shows page, if you could make the shows picture and/or name hyperlink, it would be highly appreciated.

    • Calscie,
I've been pretty much avoiding the tracker altogether. When it was introduced, I put some effort into re-entering all the information about which seasons and episodes of which shows I had watched, and then the next time I looked, all of the boxes were blank again so I'm not even bothering until they have this properly fixed.
If you start with the TV Listings Calendar (http://beta.sidereel.com/topic/tvsche..., you could find most of the shows that were broadcast, then you only have to go to your tacker calendar occasionally to see if there are episodes of any other shows you're tracking that you might have missed.
It's not a perfect solution, but it does save me the bother of scrolling like hell, at least for awhile more.

    • Worm,
There ain't no nothing on that site. It's all geek garble and better suited for folks who know how to use Linux.
I'm technologically illiterate: that's why I use a Mac. And Macs don't do downloads very well.
At least I don't think they do. Truth is, I've never been much obliged to figure it out because it was easier to just get streaming access from such sites as SideReel.
Besides, what are the chances I was ever going to watch that episode again anyway?
  • I'm on a Mac, technology illiterate and going grey, I was against the whole download thing too and always streamed. But recently because of changes and want of an easier method I've started switching over, it seems for me quicker to dl a show (about a quarter of the time) from sites like the Wheresmyshow, Warezbb etc than to stream. Also if its a megaupload link you can just change the megaupload bit in the link to megavideo and then post the link here on Sidereel, it gives back a little and breaks up the tide of bogus megavideo links on pages. If you want to find a new release of a show quickly I'd give it a try.

I find the "You just watched..." dialog that pops up when you click a link to watch a show frustrating. Often, I'll have to click on a few links before I find one that works. This used to be quick (I could just open several tabs at once), but now I need to close the dialog between each one which is an awkward middle step. I'd be thrilled if you could come up with a more passive UI device to let users jump to the next episode (perhaps a bar at the top of the page that says "you just watched..." but doesn't steal focus?).

On a related note, I find the "report link" button on that popup kinda awkward. When I hit it, I want the dialog to go away (since I didn't just watch the episode if I reported the link was broken) rather than just acknowledging my click and still forcing me to go hit the big X in the corner.

The watched episode notification pops up after you click on one of the links. Its real annoying since the page is disabled till you take care of that popup. Many times you have to go through multiple links to find out which one is working, and each time you have to click on the popup. I would really like you to remove that popup.

"you just watched" pop-up can be very annoying and not at all helpful since a lot of the links that get posted are duds (don't work/were removed), but going back to the list is prevented by the pop up and now getting to the next episode link takes 2 clicks instead of one.... now imagine if 10... or 20 ... or 30 links are all duds... fingers start hurting and frustration sets in...

      Hi Boris,
Thanks for the feedback and I totally understand your frustration, given our recent influx of spam. For future updates, we're considering alternatives to this "welcome back" pop-up, including possibly the ability to "disable" it or have it show up only when you've watched a significant amount of the episode. Thanks again for weighing in!

I'm not really sure where i'm supposed to put this but heres the thing. That little pop-up that comes up whenever you click a link to a show and it says "welcome back! watch next episode?" thats really great in theory but is really annoying in practice. the reason being is that most of the time when going through the list of links it takes a while before you find one with good quality, good connection speed and isnt some annoying megavideo ad, or just flat out a broken link. And everytime you come back you gotta close the box before you can select a new link that works. All you have to do is replace this pop-up box that locks out the window with maybe just a little side box thats NOT A POPUP and is actually a part of the page. For example; theres a box on the contact page that says "where's my mini tracker? we love the minitracker too!... etc" , put the little welcome back message in something like that. that way i dont have to close it again and again with every faulty link.

**** On a side note, that banner at the top had an advertisement from sprint that put itself on top of that same popup window and i could not click the " X " button to close it. nor could i click any part of the page since it was locked out. really annoying..

      Hey Jason,
Thanks for the suggestios! I totally understand where you're coming from -- we definitely didn't intend for it to be annoying (especially given the spam situation), and instead hoped for it to add to a more personalized user experience. Since the new site launched you have this facility where a little pop up window appears after you click on the links to the shows - it is a great idea having this option to go straight to the next episode or what not, but it is driving me INSANE and is far more annoying in itself than having to backtrack and find the next episode. EVERYTIME I watch something I find I have to click on at least 5 or so links before I find the one that I want, and your pop up window stops me from clicking on multiple links at a time, having to exit that window everytime is SUCH a nuisance as I use your a couple times a day! Please find some alternative to this or I'll lose my mind!

One thing that is becoming increasingly annoying is the "Welcome Back" pop up that comes up on the link screen after you click on a link to watch a video. Sometimes I have to go through 10 links to get to a usable video and I have to close this pop up to get to another link. It would be very nice to either remove the pop up altogether or allow us to just anywhere in the browser to close it out.

      Hi Bonnie,
Believe it or not, I do not have the power to delete features from the site. However, thanks to users' helpful feedback, the rest of the SideReel team and I have been made aware of the general irritation the "welcome back" pop-up has caused and our team is working on a less invasive alternative. Thanks for the feedback! :)
    • Thanks Alex, lol, I didn't mean you personally, I just meant sidereel. I guess my frustration is why there needs to be a 'less invasive alternative' at all? Could the powers that be not just delete this feature so that everyone stops complaining and then add the new, less invasive feature when it has been created? Please know I do appreciate your response, as I had not had one yet from anyone :)

I'm writing this again. I've reported this problem twice and commented on a few of your replies already. I do not understand why this box can not be deleted! It is an interference, and only an interference. Not one single time (and I use sidereel far too much to watch far too many things!) have I ever found this box useful. With so many complaints I just can not fathom why this has not been deleted. Every time I have to click that little x I feel more and more pissed off. PLEASE someone just get rid of it!! Sidereel would be PERFECT without it!

    • Bonnie,
This stream was started back in September when the box was introduced. They were told then both how unnecessary and how annoying the thing is but for some reason, they appear to have dug their heels in; only God knows why. Two months go, Alex wrote that they were looking at ways to allow users to disable the thing but it appears we'll see the return of the Mini-Tracker before that happens (In case you're unaware, the Mini-tracker is sort of like the Elgin Marbles: lots of folks want it back but nobody's holding their breath anymore).
I wish there was something I could say that would offer you a ray of hope or some form of solace but there's not; the box sucks and we're stuck with it. Sorry.
I too use Sidereel far too much and the best that I've managed to come up with was to buy a better mouse and to position my cursor on the screen so as to anticipate that next necessary click.
Oh, and I make liberal use of the episode boxes at the bottom of the "Search Results" pages. They really are a helpful tool.

I know I find it so strange!! hilarious that you bought a new mouse lol! I find sometimes holding the command button down whilst clicking allows me to hit multiple links before the silly box comes up, but then weirdly enough however many links I've clicked corresponds with the amount of boxes I then have to close, still better to be able to sometimes clock multiple ones. I ended up buying megavideo premium - saves time because mostly megavideo links work straight away - perhaps it's a conspiracy with megavideo! lol Thanks for your response though :)

After I click on a link, there is this annoying popup message stating something like "You just watched Episode X". This wouldn't be of much annoyance if there wasn't some shows with 1 working out of 200 links total, where I have to click on "direct link" 200 times before I find the working link.

And guess what - I have to close the popup after clicking every link. That's very convenient and user friendly........

Perhaps you can keep the popup but only show it once per episode or something like that (using cookies or Javascript to remember that I closed it once).

Or the best thing would be - to remove this popup.

Can you please just get rid of the "Welcome back" popup already? It's extremely annoying and frustrating as above users have highlighted. It gets in the way of going through links. It's amazing that a website such as this would introduce something that would be completely obtrusive and in-your-face, and force you to spend more clicks and time than before the change was made.

This nuisance pop-up is a pointless (non-)feature because
    1) if I'm on the most current episode, there is no need for a "watch the next episode link", and I'm sure most of the users are capable of finding the next episode even if they aren't on the latest one
    2) the "report link" and "broken links" next to the links work fine, there isn't a need for a pop-up with these links repeated

If you MUST provide a link to the next episode, it would be far better implemented if it was made into a header of sorts on the episode links' Search Results page (i.e. where the list of links is). Above where it says "Search results for: 'X Season Y Episode Z - A'", you could change that to:

    X Season Y Episode Z - A (>> Watch the next episode)
    Search results

    ....[the list of links]....

In reply to Kendra's reply (at the top), I don't want to see it in "certain instances" either. Any web designer or even just a normal web surfer will tell you that pop-ups are annoying and unnecessary. The functionality should be implemented on to the page, not on to a disable-the-rest-of-the-page-and-appear-bang-in-the-middle pop-up.

Basically, the pop-up needs to go. Or at least have an option to disable it for users who wish to do so.
    • Alex (Official Rep) January 31, 2011 05:35
Hi m.patel, thanks for your honest feedback and your helpful suggestions. Is there a way to turn off the "Welcome Back!" popups that appear everytime you click a link? They are frustrating, especially when the entire list takes you to a dead video so you exit out of them them over and over. Most sites opted out of popup advertising 10 years ago because they are THE most annoying form of ads, so I'm not sure why Sidereel feels the need to create popups of their own, especially when they're pretty much pointless.

i've been using Sidereel for a long long time, and i love the new changes except one (and yes i know it's been a while since the implementation)...as we all know searching for a good link can sometimes be tedious (divx vs. flash, mainly, especially when the file type is not given). coming back to the link select screen and being greeted with "You just watched: xxx" screen is quite annoying. I for one, never use it anyway, can there be a way to just turn that off? i know it's only a few seconds to close it out, but it would be nice to have that option.

Why not get rid of that pop-up altogether? there's usually so many links that one has to click thru to find a working or decent one anyway, the pop-up is really just a nuisance that has to be closed every time when attempting different links. the 'broken link' and 'report link' buttons are already on the links page, so that's unnecessary in the pop-up, and if you kept the next episode button at the top AND bottom of the page (like they were briefly before), then there'd be no use for the pop-up; as i posit that there isn't any use currently.

    Dear Sidereel,

I love this website and visit it almost as much as facebook and google. There's really no other site that compares. But, the next episode pop-up is so incredibly annoying that if I were to find another website that offers the same content Sidereel does that's as easy to use as Sidereel is without little hassles like the pop-up, I would most likely switch. I almost never post or send messages like this, I'm a pretty laid back guy but holy crap, I hate the next episode pop-up. I don't mind having to go through 15 links just to find a video that hasn't been removed from the hosting site, what I do mind is having to close out the pop-up telling me I should now watch the next episode. To be honest, this pop-up is completely useless. Everything it asks me to do I can already do from the episode window I'm in. There is absolutely no point for the pop-up to exist.

I wonder how many times and how many people have to complain about this ridiculous feature before sidereel deems it worthy of fixing. It's been months; this is really pathetic.

Thank you all for your honesty. Social networking integration isn't meant to placate you or distract you -- it's an explanation of the purpose of the pop-up as something other than just a road block or extra step that gets in the way. Its function is to provide a landing page so that you can more easily return from the search links page and mark the episode as watched, progress to the next episode, and in the future give feedback on the episode via FB, twitter, etc. I completely understand that not everyone finds it useful, and in cases of mass spam links, it can be a nuisance, but many users do indeed find it useful for the functions described above, and we're just working on a happy medium to enhance user experience overall, though we realize we can't make everyone happy. I'm sorry you feel ignored because your specific request has yet to be met, but please know that we take your feedback very seriously -- and that goes for other users who don't agree with you, too -- when deciding which features to prioritize and re-work.
    • You could please everyone by making it optional, couldn't you?

when you click on a link to a shows link and that popup comes up with have you watched the show its annoying that if its spam you have to click the report button then click the x. it would be nice if you could just click the report button and the window would vanish or like it was before not even have the box pop up because it takes several trys sometimes to open up a link that works.

It doesn't sound to me like this is a priority for them (which is so obvious as to be not worth stating probably). But I can say this, I have no interest in having sidereel incorporated into social media like facebook or twitter. I still use sidereel to keep track of what shows I've watched, but I just go to watch-series now when I want to actually watch a show so I don't have to deal with the pop-up. If every link worked, the pop-up wouldn't be as annoying. But since they don't, sidereel really needs to get rid of it. Nothing is being gained by keeping it.

If user experience is really being kept in mind then I'm more than sure you guys could've stopped it by now. I don't see anybody giving this a thumbs up, its a nuisance to everybody on sidereel. Just get rid of it

    • What Morgan said. At the very least, create an option to disable the silly thing.

"Unfortunately we can't grant every request". Umm, this is the second most common problem though. How many complaining users do you need before you actually listen and remove/disable the pop-up? I wasn't expecting an immediate solution but this problem has been going on for 7 months (based on OP) at least now. I wonder how many people are working on this issue because it does not take over half a year to code a pop-up out. Why not implement the option to disable the box now and later develop methods to improve the pop-up for the users who do find it useful?!

Thanks for your honesty m.patel -- I know where you're coming from. To answer your question, no one is currently working on coding it out, so it's not an issue of it being a 7-month process to get rid of it specifically, there are just no specific plans to get rid of it completely at this time. I'm with you though, and I agree it's best implemented when there's an option to disable it based on user preference.

i don't know much about websites and what goes into running them but it's obvious there are some monetary gains to having that annoying pop up box... if not they would've gotten rid of it already. i'm guessing that it's considered as an extra click on their website and therefore goes up in the popularity? and alex's own response that they're concentrating on facebook and twitter (read: corporate deals. read: money) makes it obvious where the priority lies. don't get me wrong, i understand that many people are working on this and salaries need to be paid. but customer satisfaction should always be the number one priority, especially for a website like sidereel that thrives on repeat business.
    • Alex (Official Rep) April 29, 2011 17:27
As far as customer satisfaction being the number 1 priority, I couldn't agree more. However, there's also something to be said about maintaining a balance between prioritizing important updates and fulfilling user requests, and we're doing our best to do both!
SideReel has no corporate deals or partnership with Facebook or Twitter, but naturally social networking has its perks for spreading the word among fans who love the site!

    indifferent I’m loosing patience
Just for the record, same as 'Matt Atkin' who had his commented deleted (mysteriously), I have started watching videos on watchseries.eu more and more to avoid this pop-up.

I still use sidereel to log what I have watched etc but the benefits are slimming because of how time-consuming it is to open multiple links to find a working one... I'm sure I'm not the only one to be slipping silently away from your site because of this :/
    • Although, I'd like to add that after thinking through the pop-up, I'm not against having it there after I watched a programme - I'm only against it appearing every time you click on a link meaning that it is not possible to click many links and then skim through them to find a working one.
    • Alex (Official Rep) May 04, 2011 00:34
Matt's comment is still there -- no mysterious funny business -- unfortunately it just automatically gets collapsed in this new version of Get Satisfaction.
I understand your frustration with multiple fake/spam/non-working links, as this is unfortunately a downside to a site that relies on user-submitted content and not our own hosted videos. Our content quality team is working hard to keep this under control with the help of loyal users who help report spam and dead links.

listen, ok, i've keep getting emails about this topic after i posted a couple months ago. there is a real simple fix to this problem, you guys (sidereel) want the box function. We (the users) don't. as all of us i'm sure have been to other sites like rapidshare and megaupload and the like, they all have countdowns to when you can actually download whatever file you want. why not have a similar piece of code or script for that little box? i can't imagine it's that hard to implement site wide. that's just my two cents though.
    • Alex (Official Rep) May 04, 2011 16:23
Thanks for the constructive feedback! Keep in mind that while this topic is quite lengthy with complaints, it doesn't represent the mindset of all users, as many find it useful as a shortcut to the next episode or marking the episode as watched instead of having to repeatedly press the back button. We're definitely open to making it be optional, however, or have it occur only when you've watched a certain length of video (so it doesn't pop up every time you return from a non-working/spam link). Thanks again for your helpful feedback and idea!

What purpose does the pop-up on clicking on a (direct link) in the Search results satisfy? This is just my opinion, but it serves no *real* purpose (compared to the effort spent in displaying it) nor does it offer anything additional not already available elsewhere. It is just frustrating to click on it every time to return back to the Search results. Please consider "removal of the annoying pop-up" to be included in the To-Do list. Hopefully, SideReel developers try it out at-least a few 10s of times to understand what I am stating here and see how annoying and useless the pop-up really is.

I find it really annoying that every time that I'm coming back to the website there is this pop-up "Welcome Back" that I need to close. There is a lot of fake link on the website and sometime I need to try 20 times before I can finally watch the show. Please remove this pop-up. Thanks a lot!

Nothing annoys me more in the new Sidereeel than this TERRIBLE "feature".

When I have to search through 5, 10, 15 links before I find a viable one, it ticks me off to no end having to close this stupid popup every time.

Is there any possibility in future updates that this option will be removed or at the very least that users will have the option to disable it through a preference setting or some-such?
