Link Rating System

add option to rate links as "thumbs up" or "thumbs down." number of respective "ups"/"downs" displayed beside link; can sort links by their ratings; those that are not working will be at bottom of list, will not have to click through all of the megavideo links before finding one that works.

Thanks for your ideas gus! We have discussed working on this sort of system, but there are a lot of kinks that need to be worked out before we can start trying something like this out. We'll certainly add your thoughts to the pile and feel free to share any further thoughts or feedback on how you think this would work best!

I've been thinking this would be really useful as well, though I understand it could be difficult to implement..

I was looking through the problems section just now, and noticed a lot of complaining about links being deleted.

Taking the youtube 'thumbs up/down' idea a bit further, rather than users being able to immediately delete a link*, why not have something akin to the 'spam' flagging on youtube comments, so after (x) users select delete, it automatically deletes it and sends notification to mods who can review it for banning?
Obviously would need a minimum amount of link view/clicks before being deleted

That way valid links won't be deleted by ..people who want to show how much more awesome they are at inter-webbing (as much) though no doubt it'd be abusable as well.

*Never had the need to delete a link, so can't say if it only requires one person to do it

And off topic, If I may ask, are users banned for abusing link deletion by IP, or just username?

Great thoughts, pureenmity! Thanks for all your wonderful ideas you've been posting around - we really appreciate the well-thought out suggestions as we're always looking for good user input as we update the site.

These are all definitely things we'll consider as we think about updates to link ranking, removal, etc.

As for your question about users banned for link deletion, they may be banned by IP if there is a big issue of removal.

I think it's lame and youtube has recently started doing this. Which IMO is a failure because the old star rating was way more accurate and immediately viewable. The star system worked really well at weeding out the crap vids. But SR doesn't even host vids so whats the point....

I like the idea of a rating system but I think a five star rating would work better. Having highest rated links listed first would be really helpful.

I think it's a great idea to remove links after they have been flagged (x) number of times. But I was under the impression that this was already done when users click on "Mark as broken" next to a link, if not then how does it actually work? In my opinion it would be better to combine the two ideas into one solution, using the thumbs up/down to generate ratings and then using the ratings to sort the links and automatically hide/remove the ones with the lowest score.

I do agree that star rating may give a better indication of which links are more popular since it is "immediately viewable", but there is a good reason why youtube replaced it. I am more in favor of the thumbs up/down solution, but the ratings of each link definitely needs to be more visible (e.g. like they do here http://osx.iusethis.com/top).

Now when it comes to implementing such a solution, it's actually quite easy. I understand that there can be issues with spam, but there is no good solution to this problem if there are little or no rules in place. The only way it can be achieved accurately enough is by limiting the rating option to logged in users only. That way you can set up rules and conditions to prevent most, if not all, of these issues and get a fully automated rating and sorting system. I don't really see any reasons to have it available to anonymous users at all.

In general, I think SideReel tries to make things more complicated than it needs to be. Check out this page for a good example of a rating system. It's easy to see what videos are legit and what ones work best: http://watch-series.com/episode/mad_m...

Make it so that you can rate sources so that you can find the best sources to watch the shows on. Make it so that you can rate the sources by different categories and then display them in best order. This would help get rid of bad sources and aide in quickly selecting the best link to us.

I would just ban all those sites with surveys and all that adds. Also ban people who posted those links and of course, theirs ips too. That will learn them lesson. I spent whole day looking for working links of newest American Idol episode and all I saw was "fill survey" or "go to ....". Some people are just weird.

Also, maybe it would be better to do... report link with just one click like broken link. Yeah, it would be harder for staff but better for getting rid of spam, I think.

happy I’m excited to improve sidereel
    Ideas to prevent spammers.

Like most Sidereel users - I'm sick of clicking on links only to find a video saying "Go to SomeOtherSite.com to watch this video".

    Here are several solutions....

Option 1. When exiting Sidereel to a video hosting site - keep a close-able toolbar at the top of the screen with a thumbs up/down rating system - a link that gets several thumbs down can go to a manual review/or be automatically removed from the listings. This should be able to be done without being logged in.

At the present time reporting a link is too much of an effort - so spammy links stay up longer than they should...

Option 2. Have a rating system in place for uploaders - don't automatically approve listings submitted by people who have less than X amount of thumbs up - once they get a certain amount of thumbs up their uploads automatically get approved.

Option 3. List videos by user-rating - more thumbs up - the higher up they are in the list.

Option 4. Automatically scan outgoing links daily and look for "Removed due to Copyright Violation" or similar to ensure dead links are found quicker....

Add a "Working" / "Broken" rating for registered users to vote before it is reviewed by an admin for deletion if truly broken. TVDuck has a decent version of what I am referring to, but they never delete proven broken sites. This would provide a HUGE incentive for non-registered users to register reduce spam sites.

    Thanks,

I have used sidereeI off and on for awhile now and I love its new look and new organization. The new option to mark shows and seasons as watched really helps me to keep track of where I left off in watching. Also the new reporting system is great. I have run across a few links to sites that are unsafe and many broken links. I hope to see this system used for keeping us safer and to streamline getting to a link that works well. I think the idea Gus had about letting users sort the links so that the best working links are displayed on top would go far in our quest to watch our shows. I have seen that kind of thing used on coupon sites like retailmenot.com. On the left of the coupon it shows a % of how often the coupon has worked for users. On the left of the coupon they give the option to report on whether or not the coupon worked for you. The best coupons with are then moved up and down the list based on where the % of success rates them. A system like this on sidereel would be awesome. I was thinking too about how to stop spammers from removing good links with a % system like this while working to block sites that have proven to be bad and full of spam, virus and malware or whatever. First of all don’t allow users to remove anything. Add yes remove no. With a working link rating system bad links will move down the list while good ones move up. I see no reason for people to use bad links and rate them as good unless they are the spammer. Right there that will tell you which user opinions and ratings can’t be trusted. So then the links being reported as bad are the ones you focus on. Put into place with the user reporting system an alert that lets you employees know to check out sites that are repeatedly reported as bad and possibly delete it or block them. For example let’s say after 100 reports of misconduct on www.watchshowgetavirus.com by multiple users an employee would receive an alert then check out that site. At which point it could be determined that yes this is a bad site that needs to be removed or not and possibly blocked from adding new content to you web site in the future. It would take some work at first to get them all but it might be worth the effort. On a last note I would really like to see a preview section added under each show listed. When I am looking for a new series to start watching and it would be nice to have a few previews for each show maybe also a brief general written description of the show or series. Than it would be easier to find a new show to watch without having to leave the sidereel site to check them out.
    Thank you for your time

    Suggestion: Link Delete option removed.

I noticed a couple of trigger happy spammer is deleting links on Sidereel, especially on True Blood page, and its very obvious keeping their CPA lead- site on. Lets just say there is only one spammer who is doing this, but everyone else, for revenge and due to anonymonity, starts deleting other links as well since there is now someone to blame.

I would suggest that only those who has submitted their link can delete and edit their own links.

As for the normal users, they would only see a Thumbs Up and Down to suggest that a certain link is in Good Health. If, for example a link has reached an 80% Down rate, then they will see a Report Broken Link option. Also an option to sort video links (without refreshing the page) either alphabetically (site name), Health status, and the default Date submitted.

Also, limit the caption title of the links and strip down html tags, I've tested its accepting iframes tag which breaks the page.

indifferent I’m tired of long-winded searching through links!
Until the 'kinks' have been sorted for thumbs up and down rating etc, is it possible to add another way to flag a link?

Currently you can flag a link that is broken, e.g. doesn't go where it should, however it would be useful to add another button to flag links to videos which are very poor quality, e.g. the sound lags (I've come across some of the early episodes of 'Jericho' where the sound is, by the end of the episode, lagging at least 5 seconds behind the video).

The link isn't technically broken but it is reallyyyyyyyyyyyy annoying so it would be great to be able to flag this for other users - maybe by having a little red flag appear by the link.

    sad I’m frustrated
I tried to watch a programme tonight on here and all 30 of the links redirected me to a bogus website..... it is now becoming almost impossible to watch anything on here without wading through large amounts of rubbish links and at the same time becoming very frustrated. I usually give up and go to another website, which is a shame because I have used sidereel for a long time.
Why can't you have a good and bad button beside each link so that users can report a bad link and others can see whether it's worth watching..... having to fill out a form or send an e-mail seems ridiculous, time consuming and quite frankly not worth the effort.
I hope that something can be done about this before you start to lose all your traffic

happy I’m confident that this is a good idea
I like the broken link and report link button but i think you could add another. Think about a working link or good link button that after so many button presses it pops up as a working link or as a percentage on how many people have rated it working. Now there are some downfalls to this as people can be mean and press it a bunch of times but on the up side it could save a lot of time and engery with searching though all of the sometimes 6,7,8+ pages of links to find a working one. Working links could be posted on the first page or high percentages on first and going down from there in percentages on the following pages. Just a thought let me know what you guys think!

    • Alex (Official Rep) March 13, 2012 17:36
Hi Jeff! Thanks for submitting your idea! While we do have broken & report link buttons, these are for internal use only - just our content quality team receive these reports and use them to clean up nonworking links around the site. They aren't meant to externally display which links have been marked as broken. That said, I totally agree that a 'working link' label would be helpful for easier link-browsing; however, we struggle with the idea of spammers taking advantage of these tools to get more traffic to their sites (whether or not they're actually working or not)!
    • I have thought about the spammers i have a few ideas on how to slow them since you cant ever really stop them. For one you could set up the working link button as once per ip address which may or may not work because it isn't really that hard to change your ip address. A slightly better idea would be once per user per link that would make a percentage system more accurate. I have seen it work on other sites sometimes the percentage ratings do not go any high then 60-80% but you can definitely tell the spam ones and links of bad quality as they are always at under the threshold of 30%. The only downfall i can think of to the once per user per link is you may get a bunch of new user sign ups but you could but in place a 1 day verification period so that you can only watch links and cant post or rate videos until you guys approve that they are a real user. With this you could delete the accounts that have only been used once in 30 days or something along those lines. Just a thought throwing ideas out there. Let me know if you need any help with this or would like to see it in action i vist lots of sites and could give you a list of a few sites if you guys need any more ideas let me know.

    Hello Alex,

You should start a rating system for websites submitted on sidereel.
You can give them rating like 5 stars, 4 stars, 3 stars...etc.

And the 5 stars websites should appear on top of the list. and in 5 stars websites,
The 5 stars website who submit the link earliest should appear at the top of the list.

In the current rating system some good websites are facing drawbacks. As they are submitting the link earliest, but still their links are not showing on top of the list.

    Sorry for my bad english.
