Why are there less links on SideReel lately?
Recently I've been having a harder time finding working links to watch many of my shows. What gives?

1As you have been using SideReel in recent months to watch and track your favorite TV shows online, you may have experienced some frustration in that there have been fewer options as to where you are able to watch your favorite shows. Furthermore, some of you have noted that you have submitted links offering options to watch shows, only to find that they are then being removed from the site.
We have read your comments, concerns and feedback. It has always been a part of SideReel’s copyright policy that we follow takedown requests from copyright holders. Here’s the good news: SideReel isn’t going anywhere! SideReel will remain a place where you can both watch TV online and submit links to do so; we will also continue to uphold our copyright policy.
Aside from being a place to watch your favorite shows online, we want to remind you that we are committed to providing you with a more awesome entertainment experience. This is why we’ve been rolling out enhancements to your TV Tracker, SideReel’s news and original video segments and our social features, as well as a number of exciting new features that are on the horizon. SideReel most importantly is a community created by TV fans for TV fans and we are excited about what’s in store for the future. We love our users and look forward to hearing your input on what other features and experiences you want our team to build for you!

I've also noticed that in a number of programs, the previous episodes have been deleted except for the most recent. Thus, I can't view earlier episodes in a program. Why is that?

you guys do realize that by doing this you will loose a lot, I mean a lot of people coming to your site? that was the reason I came to this site, because I can watch any show at any time, I mean that I could have done that, but now I cant. by trying to be "Legit" and at the same time trying to keep the people that loved you when you let things be, you will be making this a site like tvguide.com. but don't get me wrong, if I got a letter saying take the links down or pay lots of $$$$$$, I would take down the links. but if you want to keep a lot of people coming here I would just suggest that you find some kind of loop hole that you can use. if you want, I can help you. That's what I wanted to say. good luck, And I loved the site when I could go to sidereel and watch any tv show I wanted, I told everyone I knew about you guys.

To be fair to sidereel, here in the uk I am always able to catch up with my weekly american programs and up until the illegal take down of Megavideo was able to find a link for nearly every episode to every series i wanted... I dont discredit sidereel nor all the other sites that have had similar issues since megavideo ceased, unfortunately people became over reliant with uploading using megavideo (however brilliant it is) and thats the main reason i see for so little links to the older episodes... my advice you want an older episode download a torrent... ultimately thank you sidereel for providing a FREE brilliant service that never lets me down.

I don't think you folks understand exactly how DMCA takedown requests work. Basically, Sidereel gets a list of links provided by viewers for content hosted elsewhere (putlocker, novamov, etc) that they show on their site for specific episodes of TV shows and movies. They're like Google for movies and TV. If the government agencies like the FCC get wind of copyright infringement (ex. a full episode of a Fox show on Youtube given as a link) they file a DMCA takedown request. usually it goes like "take it down or we inform the copyright holder who can then sue you". So, that particular link goes down. With Megavideo's case, it was "take all their links down" or have trouble staying in business. It is in Sidereel's business to show as many valid links as possible, including those for iTunes, Hulu Plus, and others that cost money, as well as pirate sites and file share servers, that's how they bring in customers and generate advertizing revenue. Thus, fewer links available for viewing. Does this make sense to everyone?

I just tried the TNT link to a show and you can't even watch their videos unless you have a subscription to a cable or satellite company. Too many stupid laws. Come on! it was on TV, for free!! Let us watch what we missed! I'm waaaaaaay more likely to go buy the DVDs, with special features, once I have seen a show and know that I like it!

I have been willing to sift through the sites that want you to join various download sites and annoying popups but not the only sites left are pay sites. welcome to the new internet. access only for those with money

Bummer! Thanks for the follow-up. It's possible that more links will be added in the future as they become available, but I totally understand your frustration!

I think what the Sidereel folks are saying is that it's out of their hands. They have never hosted video, just links to video on external sites. If more links are rendered bad, due to removal on the grounds of infringement on an external site, they remove the link when we report it, because it's no good to us. If activists or internet piracy "police" complain to them, they have to remove it.
These things seem to be much more common, lately. Since Sidereel has been such a huge resource for us, they're an equally huge target. I've been seeing other sites shut themselves down, all together.
Remember, it's still a valuable tool. I use it to guide me, find episode descriptions, and to remember the different shows I like. Then, if they don't have links, I go to a smaller, alternate site. If you poke around, google it, etc, you'll find them.
Understanding the frustration I'm reading on here, there's really no reason to threaten to leave the site. I don't think they can help it.
Also, remember that change is the only constant, especially with this stuff. Remember megavideo, videobb? Oh, no! They're gone! Dat's cool. Now we have putlocker, sockshare (I sometimes run 2 at once and swap back and forth when it loads too slow, tee hee), and those other newer ones instead of the old and very simular, frogmov and karambavidz. It's probably not going to be worse, just different, unless our government continues to look more and more like China's.
Necessity is the mother of invention, and there will probably be more and more options. I bet we will end up paying so little to watch legitimately, it'll be worth the trouble it saves. Maybe there will be a Pandora for commercials mixed in or something-I dunno.
Anyway, I hope you enjoyed the novel. I'm just sayin', hey, take it easy!
And, Sidereel? it would be nice to have some insight on the politics of all this SOPA/PIPA-type action and resistance. What all has changed? What can we do?- view 3 more comments

Thanks RJaxn for writing what I was going to say. People are responding to Sidereel like they're paying customer's and not getting what they paid for! It's a free service that they're providing us and if there are legal issues that could cost them a lot of money, then of course they're going to abide by the law!
What some people can't seem to get through their heads (Sarah N Justin Blanton are you listening!?) is the fact that there are copyright laws and no you have not already paid for watching. Nothing is free, not television (because you're forced to watch commercials while the program is on which helps pay for that tv show being aired) and not the shows that are being watched on the internet. The crack down came when Megavideo was taken off the internet. Another example is YouTube, we use to be able to watch our favorite shows there as well, now most of those shows are unavailable because of copyright infringement.
If you were the owner of that tv show, film, book, etc., you would want to be paid for your work. It's as simple as that! Your comment "NO ITS (sic) NOT FREE, WE PAY ARE (sic) ELECTRIC, INTERNET, CABLE, AND THEN WE ARE ALL TAXED ON ALL OF THAT, SO I PAY ALREADY" is ridiculous. It's like saying, "I took my car to the grocery store and I paid for all my groceries so I should get my gas for free." You're talking apples and oranges!!! The petrol company doesn't care that you paid your groceries and neither do the people who produce tv shows care that you paid for your electricity, your internet service or your taxes! They care that they're paid for their work and what they are servicing you, which is their television show! (Whew!!!)
Thanks for your service, Sidereel. No, it's not as easy to find our shows as it use to be, but you're still doing a good job considering the circumstances and changes that have taken place on the internet. Too bad there are those who don't appreciate your services! -

Come on, Sarah used all-caps... you're automatically correct when you write all-caps!

This is getting really annoying there are no links anymore to watch anything for free, can someone from sidereel please comment as to when this will be sorted out.
Im not from the US and Im not prepared to join any sites do surveys or download any media players on these sites I am just about ready to give up on this site unless things improve soon, which is a shame as It used to be a good site,
This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled
Why are there no links to watch the shows I normally watch on here. -
-
Lol, I cant believe how many whiners there are here. Sidereel has been providing free stuff for people to watch through the only legal loophole left and you people are ungrateful for it. Goodness, if this site doesn't have the link for your show USE A DIFFERENT SITE. There still are hundreds of good links out there. Personally, I love sidereel and the tv tracker. But does that mean I get to while to them when ever something doesn't work? No.
-Alex, true the site has been having less links lately. But considering we all get this for free I think you are doing an outstanding job just keeping the site running. I submit links as I find them, but I am not upset if they dont stay up for a while.
PS. Protip for linking sites. Link another list of links. This way, even though it looks like just 2-5 links its actually 30-50 links to the same show. -
-
-
i Alex i want to know what is my problem with the account because i don't know
-
Hi salma, what do you mean?
-
-
-
-
-
Along with whatever bogus links you've removed (good for you,) you've also managed to remove tons of totally legit ones from obviously legal sites such as pbs.org and hulu.com, and made them impossible to post.
And the spamsucks email is useless... they send you a generic reply, and if you respond, you never hear anything from them again.
It's good that you want to keep things legal, but if you're going to become nothing but a listing service for iTunes, then I can't imagine this site will be around for long... -
-
what are you talking about legal sites like hulu.com and others links always on top no matter how any links are in corresponding shows.

Hi Alex - sorry if I lost my temper a bit. I think the frustrating thing for some of us is that the behavior we're seeing on the site doesn't match the behavior that is described as what is expected... specifically, links from legitimate sources such as Hulu or PBS being deleted after being added (and never reappearing.) I understand that all software is a work in progress, but I do hope that some of these issues are on somebody's radar and will improve in the future.
Thanks,
Matt -

Hi Matt,
Links from Hulu should not be being deleted; if you're still having this issue, please contact info@sidereel.com. -

TAKE NOTES FROM THE PIRATE BAY!!! EVERY SINGLE INTERNET PROVIDER IN THE UK HAS BLOCKED THEIR SITE, TOOK ME ABOUT 15 SECONDS TO GET AROUND IT. WHERE THERES A WILL THERES A WAY!
-
ALSO Z-MOVIE HAVE BEEN RAIDED BY THE FEDS ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS YET STILL MANAGE TO GET THINGS BACK UP AND RUNNING.
I CAN HONESTLY SEE WHY PEOPLE ARE GETTING FRUSTRATED, IF ILLEGALITY WAS SUCH A PROBLEM TO SIDEREEL STAFF THERE WOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN ANY LINKS AT ALL WHATSOEVER EXCEPT HULU ETC WHO CHARGE YOU.
BASICALLY, SIDEREEL STAFF, YOU NOW HAVE A SITE THAT DOESN'T GIVE THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT, THEREFORE IT IS ONLY NATURAL THAT PEOPLE WILL GO ELSEWHERE. IT IS REALLY THAT SIMPLE. -
-
Hi d,
Thanks for your input - however, SideReel is and always has been a completely legal site. We're sorry that you're having a more difficult time finding links through SideReel, but as always, we don't host our own content, so unfortunately we can't do much about the availability of third-party content or lack thereof. -
-
-
-
-
so i understand copyright issues, but why even have some shows up as an option if the links wont work???like true blood for example...if the links are useless then take it off the search option...

Hi Joann, shows are listed on SideReel regardless of whether or not there are links for a given episode. SideReel simply provides a place for users like you to submit places to watch – if we don't first list the show, then users can't add links for this show.
As Matt eloquently explained (thanks Matt!), the other main focus of the site is to allow users to keep track of their shows and create their own personal TV calendar, which can't be done unless we provide the most accurate, complete listings possible! -
-
-
-
THE BEST FEATURE BY FAR ON THIS SITE IS THE TV TRACKER / CALENDAR. YOU MIGHT NOT BE ABLE TO FIND WORKING LINKS ON THIS SITE BUT ITS LIKE HAVING YOUR OWN PERSONAL TV GUIDE FOR JUST THE SHOWS YOU HAVE CHOSEN TO TRACK.
I USE THIS SITE TO KEEP TRACK OF WHAT DAYS VARIOUS OF MY FAVORITE SHOWS ARE AIRING NEW EPISODES...THEN I GO ELSEWHERE TO WATCH. YOUR BEST BET IS TO FIND FOREIGN HOSTED SITES FOR VIEWING.
WHERE THERE'S A WILL....THERE ARE STILL SEVERAL WAYS....AND IN THE INTERNET AGE THERE ALWAYS WILL BE. -
-
-
-
-
Got the same problem here. I suppose loads have submitted links for current episodes yet it does not show results. :( Is there something wrong. Someone has got to look into this. Not only popular shows that always got DMCA but unpopular ones as well.
-
Hi Eva, as always, please email spamsucks@sidereel.com for site-related inquiries.
-
-
USE THIS SITE TO KEEP TRACK OF WHEN NEW EPISODES OF YOUR FAVORITE SHOWS ARE AIRED, AND EVEN TO READ EPISODE DESCRIPTIONS.
I DON'T WANT MY OTHER FAVORITE SITES BEING MESSED WITH....SO I'M NOT LISTING LINKS HERE.... BUT TRUST ME WHEN I SAY THERE IS NOT ONE SINGLE SHOW OUT THERE THAT CANNOT BE VIEWED COMMERCIAL FREE AND WITHOUT PAYING $$ AS SOON AS THE VERY DAY THE EPISODE IS AIRED BY A NETWORK.
DON'T GIVE UP!! -

Hi Alex,
I have a question i am submitting links to the sidereel from past 2 years and i am a big fan of sidereel. But suddenly from last weeks my links are demoted from top of the sidereel page to bottom. i already send mail to spamsucks & sidereel info but didn't get reply back.
Please advice- view 2 more comments

Cannot find any show that I want to watch now, any link i goto is for dodgy Ad sites requesting you to fill a form.
Yet again Big Brother screws the little guy.
I'm afraid SideReel is about to lose most of its customers. The site has now become pointless.
Such a shame- view 1 more comment

True Blood
As I live in the UK I cant subscribe to the affinity link or the other one which needs a HBO registration, so here in the UK we cant watch live TV and movies not fair. -
-
Hi there,
Make sure you're clicking the "search links" button for any given episode to view the full list of links submitted. Any links with a US flag label next to the logo are only available in the US, and unfortunately that's out of SideReel's hands.
Keep in mind SideReel doesn't provide live streams at all. -
-
-
-
I think that it's exceedingly thoughtful and indulgent of SideReel to provide this open forum for people to vent their ignorance and misguided anger, let alone to take the time to respond to some of these individuals.
-
im not angry thats pre jump suit us lol

kinda funny its not like we have no cable what do they care its just we dont have the time to catch certian shows but dont have a dvr if they are gonna get mad get mad at the pirated videos if you get the tv shows online then they shouldent have a full year to replay the episodes we missed!!
-
-
-
It seems to me that links should now be emailed to SideReel users as they become available-if the episode to which the user is subscribed hasn't been viewed yet.
Obviously the option for email notifications with lists of links should be an opt-in option per series or by quota of available free links. For example, if there are less than 4 free links then those links should be emailed as they become available.
I can appreciate SideReel's wish to respect copyright holders. However, linking to content has never been a copyright offence. Why give away a freedom to link to content elsewhere? It is obvious that SideReel is selling out their users to promote links to iTunes and other pay services to earn a piece of that revenue. -
-
I have been trying to catch up with arrow and supernatural but all the link you have to pay for, i understand this site isnt free but i just watch the 4th season of white collar almost without problem and didnt have to pay, i know some series are more important than others but i never catch them on time on tv. I'll try to google other site like yours but if i cant watch any of my fav show what the point???
